Nile issues discussed

Last updated: 01.04.2012 // The Minister of Irrigation and Water prof. Saif-Aldin Hassan Abdalla gave a comprehensive briefing on Nile Basin issues when he met with ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud last week. Sudan wants constructive engagement and cooperation with all Nile Basin countries.

The Minister emphasized the need for cooperation among the riparian countries and said the Nile Basin Initiative had contributed substantially to that. He said that cooperation created win- win situations and exemplified that through the benefits Sudan and Egypt could reap from Ethiopian investments in hydropower if developed in a cooperative manner. He acknowledged Norway’s positive role in supporting the Nile Basin Initiative.

The Minister said continued cooperation among all the riparian countries will be necessary to move ahead in securing the best possible utilisation of the common goods of the Nile waters. Ambassador Kjemprud recognized the positive role Sudan is playing and urged the Minister to continue playing such a role. Bilateral issues and cooperation were also discussed.
