Norway supports Peace Negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan

Last updated: 23/11/2011 // An agreement between the Norwegian Embassy and Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) was signed this week, for support to the Transitional Support Unit (TSU). The TSU has been established under the IGAD auspices, and will provide logistical and financial support to the AUHIP led post-referendum negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan.

The TSU has been established to take over some of the tasks of the former Assessment and Evaluation Commission (AEC), whose mandate ended in June this year. Most notably the TSU will provide logistical and financial support to and Parties and the AU High Level Implementation Panel for the ongoing Post-referendum negotiations.

Norway is the lead donor in this joint initiative with DFID. In addition to providing direct financial support to the TSU, Norway is financing the secondments of two of the three core personnel of the TSU..  The team will be based in Juba and Khartoum, while spending considerable time in Addis Ababa where the main negotiation meetings are being held.

“IGADs role is second to none in assisting peace deliberations in Sudan since the Declaration of Principles (DOP) and throughout the CPA negotiations” says ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud who signed the agreement with Executive Secretary Mahboub Maalim of IGAD. “Norway is happy to continue the cooperation and support to IGAD started during the Naivasha talks” says the ambassador.
