Last Friday the Speaker of Parliament in Sudan, Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Tahir, gave a lecture on Sudan-South Sudanese relations at a well attended meeting at the Norwegian Foreign Policy Institute (NUPI) in Oslo.
The lecture came at the end of an official visit to Norway where the Speaker met the Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and his counterpart Dag Terje Andersen at the Norwegian Parliament (Storting).
The Speaker and his delegation also met with the deputy speaker of the Storting Aktar Chaudry, Commitee heads and members of Parliament as well as the Minister of Education and chairwoman of the Socialist Left Party Kristin Halvorsen. A broad range of issues were discussed during the meetings including increased cooperation between the two Parliaments, the current political and economic situation in Norway and Sudan and bilateral cooperation including in the academic sector in particular.
The Speaker maintained Sudan’s wish to negotiate peaceful settlement of ongoing conflicts in the country and to establish good neighbourly relations with the new nation South Sudan. He acknowledged Norwegian assistance to the peace process in Sudan and Norway’s assistance to the oil sector and the oil negotiations as well as Norway’s focus on economic development. Ambassador Kjemprud who attended the meetings during the visit describes the visit as “successful and with a lot of substance and touched upon issues of great concern and importance for Sudan and Norwegian-Sudanese relations”. The Speaker and his delegation arrived from Switzerland and travelled on to Germany for a similar visit.
