Attack on Omdurman

From the 10th to the 12th of May the Sudaneese capital was attacked by rebels of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). Lead by Khalil Ibrahim, JEM is one of the biggest armed groups fighting government forces in Darfur. The rebels reached Khartoum after crossing about 1000 kilometers, including vast tracts of desert, in a short time with relatively little opposition from the government. As a result 200 people died and hundreds were injured while the capital was paralyzed for three days. No Norwegian citizen was directly affected by the attacs. But they had to stay inside because of the curfew that was in effect for two days.

The UN, USA, European Community, Norway and most of Sudan’s neighboring countries (Egypt, Eretria, Libya) condemned the attack. Also most Sudanese political parties, the Umma party, SPLM and Democratic Unionist Party, condemned the attack. The Communist party and other left-leaning parties such as Haq and the Sudan Liberal Party, had a more moderate response to the JEM’s attack on Omudrman.

A number of civil society organizations and high profile Sudanese human right activists have issued statements expressing their concern about the arbitrary arrests according to ethnicity, and warned against the rebel attack being used as a justification for a further limitations on civil liberties that are already hugely restricted in Sudan. Many human rights organizations have expressed their concerns about summary executions and arbitrary arrests of the Darfuri in Khartoum.

The effects of the attack have more or less disappaired as Khartoum has now returned to full normality again.
