Norwegian mine clearing expert released in Sudan

Last updated: 21/05/2012 // Mine clearing expert John Sörbö was released today by the Sudanese authorities in Khartoum

“I am very pleased that Mr Sörbö has now been released, and I am very grateful to Thabo Mbeki and the African Union for the part they have played in this,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre.

Mr Sörbö was on a humanitarian assignment together with colleagues from the UN when he was arrested on 28 April in the border area between Sudan and South Sudan on charges of illegal border crossing.

Since his arrest, the Embassy has had regular consular access to Mr Sörbö, and he has been well treated.

“A good dialogue with the Sudanese authorities since his arrest has helped to bring the matter to a satisfactory conclusion,” said Mr Støre.
